News updated February 3, 2012

For the week of January 29 through February 4, crime has been limited for Beat 612.  There were two larcenies in the Village, one which occurred when a woman left her purse unattended while she went to call a cab, and the other being a stolen tag off a motorcycle.  Another reported crime was a car break-in late Saturday night on Stokeswood near the Village.  A GPS, briefcase and some papers were stolen.  As is often the case with vehicle break-ins, the car was registered to someone who lives OTP.  Finally, on the 2nd, the police arrived at a house in the 300 block of Patterson to a burglary in progress.  The men had loaded several items into their van, including 3 ladders, paint, a toilet, and an assortment of plumbing fittings (totaling $320).  The two men were not apprehended but their vehicle was impounded and the victims confirmed that the property in the van came from inside the home, which is under renovation.

The week of January 22-28 was a fairly light one for crime, yet a couple significant crimes did occur.  A burglary on the 24th in the 1400 block of Orange Blossom Terrace was a bit disturbing, as the perpetrators entered the home through a window with multiple people inside at 3 am.  The victims hid in the closet until the police arrived.  The burglars rang the bell first, but it was unclear how long they waited for a response before entering the home.  There was also an armed robbery on Flat Shoals near McPherson just after 11 pm on January 23th.  The perpetrator had a knife, but did not hur the victim after he gave him $21 from his wallet.  Other crimes for the week included a juvenile threatening her two guardians with a pair of knives, a woman discovering the next day that her wallet was missing from her purse after having been to the Earl the night before, and a theft from a car in the Village which netted the thief jewelry ($4500), $800 worth of tools and equipment, a camera, a coat, and a purse with ID and credit cards.  The victim was not sure if they locked the car and there were no signs of forced entry.  The victim lives in Snellville.

Five crimes were reported for the week of December 25-31 for Beat 612 in East Atlanta.  There was an armed robbery of the clerk at the Citgo at Flat Shoals and Fayetteville about 6 pm on December 29th.  Also that evening a 2002 Dodge was reported stolen in the 1300 block of Ormewood.  A report was taken at the Shoals Crossing Apartments on Flat Shoals on December 30th that 19 A/C units were stolen, 5 from the Atlanta portion of the complex.  The time of these thefts was not clear from the report we reviewed.  There was also a larceny in the 1100 block of Bouldercrest as tenants took a washer/dryer sometime in December when they moved out.  There was also one burglary in the 1500 block of Glenwood sometime between the 23rd and the 27th.  Entry was made by prying open a bathroom window.  Among the items stolen were 2 laptops, a camera, a tool bag with tools and DJ equipment.  One of the victims advised that some of the stolen items fit the description of an ad on Craigslist.  We also received some good news that an arrest was made in connection with the burglary on Marbut on December 20th.  Numerous laptops were recovered and APD is hoping to issue more arrest warrants soon.  If you have a serial number for a recently stolen laptop, be sure to check with APD to see if they may have recovered it.

Nine crimes were reported for the week of Dec 18-24.  There was a burglary on Tuesday about 12:45 pm in the 1400 block of Marbut.  Three black males stole a laptop and a flatscreen TV.  They crashed one car getting away and may have crashed a second vehicle that evening.  Walter Johns (aka Pooh Bear) was believed to be one of the men fleeing the home as seen by the EASP officer on duty.  This is why we always employ Zone 6 officers, who are familar with many of our local perpetrators.  Another burglary occurred just after 3 am on Friday in the 1400 block of Newton.  The residents reports that this was the fifth burglary in three years.  An aggravated assault on Moreland was reported on Wednesday when a man pulled a knife on his Mother.  A Dodge Stratus was stolen from the Village around 6 pm on Saturday night.  An attempted car theft in Marshall's Landing occurred on Wednesday night or Thursday morning.  Two car break-ins were reported in the Village early Sunday morning; one involved the theft of a car stereo, and the other a theft of a handbag, a book and a lamp.  There was also a car break-in between 8-9 p.m. on Wednesday in the 400 block of Haas.  Taken were a Laptop, I-pod, check book, jewelry, clothes and a hair dryer.  It's interesting to note that the last two car break-ins were both from a 2010 Dodge Charger and in the same area, thus it may be the same vehicle.  We're checking to see if that is the case.  Finally, two vehicles from the same location in the 1200 block of Portland were broken into early in the the morning of December 24th.  One was left unlocked and the other was accessed by breaking a window.  Items stolen included an ipod, cellphone and some jewelry.

For the week of December 11-17, five crimes were reported.  The first crime actually occurred on December 9th, when a patron walked out of the Glenwood in the wee hours of the morning without paying their drink tab of $26.  Another crime occurred on December 2nd and was reported this week, where a resident of Branan Towers said that their wallet was stolen by a Humana representative.  And on December 15th around 4 pm, a laptop was snatched by two men while victim was standing on the corner near Graham Circle.  There was also an attempted but not successful car theft in the 300 block of Haas around 5:00 pm on December 17th.  There were also two aggravated assaults on December 17th.  In the 400 block of Maynard Terrace, a man cut his wife on the arm with a box cutter and was arrested.  In the other case in the 600 block of Brownwood, a man assaulted his father, who was then taken to the hospital with several lacerations to his head.

As of December 13th, East Atlanta is now designated as Beat 612 rather than the old designation of 610.  However, the boundaries for the beat remain the same.  As for Zone 6, Grant Park and the Old Fourth Ward have been added, while the Morningside, Cheshire Bridge and Thomasville areas are no longer under the auspices of Major Dalton.

For the week of December 4-10, five crimes were reported.  A man robbed the Long John Silvers on Moreland on December 7th at 3 pm, and was immediately apprehended.  Another incident occurred on December 3rd in the early morning hours in the Village but wasn't reported until the 6th.  A vehicle was left unsecured and the perpetrator took jewelry, an I-pad, a Coach bag, a cell phone and a handgun.  The victim was later called by the perpetrator to tell him it was a lesson not to leave his vehicle unsecured.  There was a burglary in the 600 block of Blake between 3-3:30 pm on December 8th.  There was a domestic dispute with an aggravated assault reported on Graham Circle on December 10th, although the victim had no visible injuries. And on Friday evening in the 600 block of Gresham, a GPS was stolen from a car after someone broke the driver's window.

For the week of November 27 - December 3, there were eight reported crimes, including one pedestrian robbery and two burglaries.  The pedestrian robbery occurred in the 600 block of Clifton at 8:15 am on November 28th, when three men robbed a juvenile of $25 and his Marta card.  The first burglary occurred on the 27th or 28th in the 1100 block of Hilburn, and the second around 4:30 pm in the 800 block of Gresham.  There was also one auto theft, and four larcenies ranging from two chain saws, Christmas inflatables, a purse and a guitar.  The man who took the guitar was arrested.

The week of November 20-26 was a bad one for Zone 6 compared to a year ago, with crime up over 40%.  Right here in East Atlanta, crime was about on par with what we've seen of late.  There was one burglary in the 700 block of Blake, one commercial burglary at the East Atlanta Rec Center (nothing was reported to be stolen), and an armed robbery after 4:00 am in the Village while a man was waiting for a taxi.  There was also a report of a stolen pitbull on Metropolitan Place. And finally, there were three vehicle thefts, all occurring on November 23rd or 24th.  They happened in the 500 block of Flat Shoals Avenue, the 1100 block of Colby Court and the 800 block of Stallings.  All of the vehicles were 1995 or older, and it's a bit unusual to see so many thefts in a short period.  We're keeping a close eye on auto thefts to see if this develops into a pattern.

For the week of November 13-19, five crimes were reported.  The first was a robbery and carjacking at Moreland and McPherson on Monday around 3:15 am.  The second was a burglary in the 1100 block of Bouldercrest on Tuesday between 2-5 am.  Also, A/C units were reported stolen from unoccupied properties on Jobeth and Blake that had not been checked in some time.  Finally, one auto break-in was reported in the 1500 block of Glenwood.  A wallet with money and credit cards was taken, which may indicate that the thief saw the wallet and broke the window.

For the week of November 6-12, eight crimes were reported. In the 1100 block of Fayetteville, there were two burglaries and one theft of a catalytic converter.  There were also burglaries in the 1700 block of Flat Shoals and the 900 block of Hilburn.  There was also a report of an A/C unit theft in the 1600 block of Flat Shoals that had occurred on October 27th.  A robbery and carjacking was reported after 2 am in the Village, when the robber climbed into an occupied but unlocked vehicle.  Finally, two vehicles at the same location were broken into around 4 p.m on Thursday afternoon.  On Tuesday, the EASP put out an alert for a gold Chevy Tahoe or similar with heavily tinted windows and tag BII 7054. This vehicle was carrying four black males when seen in the Village Walk subdivision twice between 9 am and noon.  It may well be tied to a Fayetteville Road burglary and another burglary around 8:30 that same morning in unincorporated Dekalb county off of Fayetteville near Flat Shoals.

For the week of October 30 - November 5, eight crimes were reported.  There was an armed robbery on October 30th around 2:45 am on May Avenue.  A man was attacked by a group of seven black males and had his wallet and cell phone taken.  Fortunately his injuries were all minor.  On November 2nd just before 3:00 pm there was a burglary in the 400 block of Pasley.  There was also a burglary in the 700 block of Gresham on November 3rd about 2:30 pm.  There was another reported burglary in the 1600 block of Glenwood on November 1st or 2nd.  This is the fourth recent burglary at this address but this time nothing was taken.  Other crimes for the week included two auto break-ins, one was a stolen license plate and the other a stolen person from an unlocked vehicle around 4:00 pm in the 400 block of Maynard Terrace.  The other two crimes were a stolen cell phone at the Graveyard Tavern and a stolen A/C unit on Flat Shoals Avenue.

October crime data has been compiled.  There were 34 crimes reported in October 2011 for East Atlanta compared to 33 in September 2011.  September crime was down 30% versus September of 2010, while October crime was down 19% versus October 2010.  There were 9 burglaries in both September and October of 2011, and that total of 18 is the lowest for these two months since we started tracking crime in 2006.  There were 28 burglaries in the same two month period in 2010.  And the total of 67 crimes for these two months is also the lowest in this six year period, compared to 89 last year.  This is a good sign of improvement, since these are normally the two worst crime months of the year in East Atlanta.

For the week of October 23-29, six crimes were reported.  One was an auto theft from a parking lot near the Village.  There were three thefts; two were A/C units and one was a couple propane tanks from a store on Moreland.  There were also 2 burglaries, one in the 1100 block of Fayetteville while the resident was sleeping, and another in the 1600 block of Glenwood.  This is at least the fourth recent burglary from the house on Glenwood, and there is a suspect named Milton.  He is a black male in his late 40s or early 50s, thin and wearing a baseball cap.  He has been seen in the past riding a green bike.  APD is also looking for a suspect that may be tied to the Fayetteville burglary but we can't release a picture or description at this time.

The week of October 16-22 had seven crimes reported.  There were two burglaries and five auto-related larcenies.  One burglary was in the 1300 block of Ormewood and the other was appliances taken from a vacant house a couple months ago and just being reported now.  The auto-related crimes involved three car break-ins, two in the vicinity of the EAV and one in the 1600 block of Newton.  The other two were in the same night on Bouldercrest and Piper Circle, where wheels were stolen from the vehicles.  There were reports of similar wheel thefts nearby in unincorporated Dekalb county.

The week of October 9 - 15 had eight reported crimes.  The most serious was a carjacking at a gas station at Flat Shoals and Fayetteville just before midnight on October 13th.  Three burglaries were reported, including one in the 1400 block of Metropolitan that appeared to be the result of a dispute between a tenant and landlord.
There was a burglary in the 700 block of Maynard Terrace in the very early hours on Tuesday, and another early Sunday afternoon in the 1600 block of Van Epps.  The only reported auto theft was of a vehicle that broke down at I-20 and Maynard Terrace.  Finally, there were three car break-ins.  All occurred late Sunday night or early Monday morning.  Two were not typical cases, as one was the theft of a catalytic converter and the other involved breaking into a garage  in the 700 block of Pasley and then breaking into the two cars inside.

For the week of October 2 - October 8, ten crimes were reported.  There was an armed robbery of three women on Bouldercrest near Flat Shoals on Sunday morning at 12:30 am by three teenage black males, all armed with handguns.  The robbers took their purses and did not harm the women, who were walking to the EAV.  There have been a couple burglaries, one in the 600 block of Flat Shoals on Monday around 10 am and another in the 600 block of Blake between midnight and 8 am on Tuesday.  Both burglaries involved yard maintenance items, with the first one through a window of a shed and the second through a garage door.  There was also a break-in at Village Ice Cream where $40 was taken.  This comes on the heels of an unreported break-in there two weeks earlier.  Two auto thefts were reported, although in one case there was only damage to the steering column but the car was not taken.  Finally, there were four thefts for the week, including a bike and two a/c units.  In one theft, a woman had a wallet stolen and an arrest was made.

For the week of September 25 - October 1, nine crimes were reported.  There was a road rage incident at I-20 and Moreland where shots were fired.  And there was a burglary that occurred between September 20-26 in the 1300 block of Milton Place.  No forced entry was discovered but several windows were unlocked.  There was also an attempted burglary in the 1600 block of May but the burglar appears to have been scared off by the alarm after breaking a rear window.  On Tuesday evening, two armed robberies were reported.  One occurred on or near Paoli, and a suspect was arrested.  The other occurred later in the evening on Leah Lane, and the perpetrator eluded a massive police search.  Other crimes include a cell phone stolen at the library, a catalytic converter taken from a vehicle on Bouldercrest, a purse and laptop stolen from an unlocked vehicle in a parking lot while the owner was inside buying cigarettes and an attempted car theft where the ignition was damaged but car was not taken.

The East Atlanta Security Patrol has received a generous offer from two residents in the community.  They have offered to match dollar for dollar up to $5,000 for any new EASP memberships between now and September 30th.  And the EASP will throw in the month of September free for new members.  This is a great opportunity to join the EASP and to reduce crime in East Atlanta.  The matching funds will be dedicated to evening and weekend patrols in high risk areas.  While crime is vastly reduced in recent years during daytime hours, we're seeing certain areas hit often after dark.  This extra money will help the EASP target patrols toward those times and areas that may be seeing high incidences of nighttime crime.

For the week of September 18-24, a little more crime than usual was reported.  A total of ten crimes occurred in East Atlanta, including three of the six residential burglaries in Zone 6.  On a more positive note, the EASP participated in it's second arrest in two weeks, in tandem with an on-duty officer.  Both responded in less than two minutes to an alarm call on Glenwood, and were able to match the footprint on the door to the shoe of someone in the area.  As for other crime, there was one commercial burglary, three vehicle break-ins, two larcenies and one auto theft.

For the week of September 11-17, five crimes were reported.  A woman was robbed on Sunday afternoon in the BofA parking lot, and an air conditioner was stolen from a home in the 900 block of Bouldercrest between September 7th and the 11th.  There was one burglary of a lawnmower reported, a garage break-in during the early morning hours (12-7) in the 700 block of Blake on September 13th.  And a TV was stolen from a home in the 1200 block of Portland on September 15th.  Finally, a car was stolen from the 1200 block of Metropolitan while the driver attended the East Atlanta Strut.

For the week of September 4-10, no crimes were reported for East Atlanta.  September is normally a bad crime month, so we're encouraged that our extra patrols in high crime areas appear to be having a positive impact the past couple weeks.  It's hard to remember any week with no crime at all, so kudos to Zone 6, our EASP officers and the criminals for giving us a much appreciated respite.  There was one arrest by an EASP officer, as the driver of a vehicle appeared to be nervous about being followed.  When stopped, it turned out that the East Atlanta man had a suspended license and an outstanding warrant.

The week of August 28 - September 3 had two reported burglaries. One occurred in the 1800 block of Montvallo between 8:30 Saturday morning and just after midnight on Sunday.  The other was an A/C unit and refrigerator stolen in the 1000 block of Bouldercrest, but occurred between July 20th and August 31st.  There was one car break-in in the 1300 block of McPherson and three thefts.  Two thefts were caught on camera, including a cell phone left on a table at the Midway Pub and money from a coin machine at the Texaco on Eastland.  The other  theft was some copper from a bank-owned home on Black Oak Drive.

The week of August 21-27 saw the largest number of crimes for Zone 6 right here in East Atlanta.  Of the 13 crimes, there were five auto thefts, two pedestrian robberies, two burglaries and four car break-ins.  One of the pedestrian robberies included a stabbing in the leg, but since the victim changed their story after the initial report and the crime was at 12:40 pm on a weekday, it's likely this was not a random crime.  The other robbery was in the Village slightly after midnight, where two women were held up at gunpoint.  The vehicle used in the robbery had been obtained in a carjacking.  To make matters a little stranger, just a few minutes later a burglary was committed in the 1000 block of Leah Lane.  It was the only significant burglary of the whole week.  The other was a copper theft from a vacant house.  On the positive side, there were two vehicles that were not actually stolen classified as auto thefts, so we really had three auto thefts for the week, if that can be classified as positive.
