EASP News as of May 5, 2013

With an arrest by APD on April 22nd of three men in East Atlanta (two adults and one juvenile) who were knocking on doors looking for a burglary target while driving around in a stolen vehicle, burglaries seem to have ceased for now.  This is the third major arrest in the past month, with all three tied to burglaries.  The other two are mentioned in reports below from prior weeks.

For the week ending May 4th, five crimes have been reported, although we could possibly see more if any were reported late on the 4th.  There has been one aggravated assault, one commercial burglary and three car break-ins.  The aggravated assault was a domestic squabble in the 1600 block of Newton involving a gun that was used by a man to threaten the mother of his child.  The burglary involved two computers and electronic equipment from the Asylum on Flat Shoals.

The week ending April 27th continues our recent trend of lower crime in East Atlanta.  Only five crimes reported for the week, with one car break-in, two larcenies, one pedestrian robbery and one burglary.
The pedestrian robbery occurred on the morning of the 22nd, when a man was offered a ride by two black males, who tried to rob him with a knife.  The man ran away unharmed with nothing taken.  The burglary was of two a/c units in the 600 block of Ora at a house under renovation.  The units had GPS tracking, which led the police to longtime neighborhood criminal Cedric Jackson, who was arrested.

The week ending April 20th is not finalized yet, so we could see another crime or two.  At the moment, six crimes have been reported, including one larceny, one auto theft and four burglaries.  Burglaries were spread out, including the 1300 block of Ormewood, the 1100 block of Fayettevillem, the 1500 block of Glenwood and the 1500 block of Van Vleck.

The week ending April 13th looked a bit better, with seven crimes reported.  There were three car break-ins, two larcenies and one auto theft.  There was one burglary on Graham Circle, with a laptop stolen from an apartment.

The trend for crime in Zone 6 for 2013 continues to be bad.  That trend has hit East Atlanta for the week ending April 6th, one of our worst weeks in some time.  There were four burglaries, one aggravated assault, three car break-ins, one car theft and two larcenies.  On the positive side, a burglary on Colby Court was spotted in progress, and two men were arrested in connection with the crime.  A stolen vehicle was recovered at the scene, as the men fled on foot once they saw the EASP officer arrive.  He arrived on the scene about three minutes after the alert citizen called the EASP.

In looking at crime stats for the first 14 weeks of 2013, several crimes are up significantly in Zone 6.  Keep in mind that these numbers do not necessarily reflect our experience in East Atlanta, but we'll get some numbers posted for that soon.  The worst percentage increases are in commercial robberies from 3 to 13, and non-residential burglaries from 22 to 42.  Not far behind are residential burglaries, up from 118 to 209, auto theft up from 175 to 259, and pedestrian robberies up from 51 to 72.  All other crimes are running about the same as a year ago for the Jan-March period, including car break-ins.

Please note that we have extended our out of town patrol notification deadline to midnight on the day prior to your departure.  The prior cutoff was 6 p.m. on the day prior to your departure.  A lot of people do tend to forget to notify us until the night before they leave town, so we hope this will help many of you get your request in without losing a day of extra patrols.

Good news again for crime in East Atlanta for the week ending February 16th.  Three crimes were reported, two auto thefts from the Village area and a theft from an unlocked car on Graham Circle.  Over the past three weeks, East Atlanata is by far the lowest crime neighborhood in Zone 6 with just nine reported crimes.  The big crime in Zone 6 at the moment is pedestrian robberies, with ten this past week and one commercial robbery.  Of the ten, four were in Edgewood.  There were also thirteen burglaries reported, including seven on Beat 601, the Virginia Highlands area.

For the week ending February 9th, just two crimes were reported for Beat 612 in East Atlanta.  There was one burglary in the 1700 block of Cecile and one car break-in reported.

The EASP website will be managing temporarily with this configuration while we build a new site.  If you have any questions, please call us at 404-954-1568.

We will be sending out membership renewal information for the first quarter of 2013, now that we have a marginally functional website.

The EASP is all digital in 2013.  All communications with our officers are now completely electronic.  On April 1st, we will be starting digital monitoring of our officers during their patrols.  To make this possible, we're seeking members who will volunteer their residence as an electronic scanning location.  In addition to better tracking our officers' movements, we'll have a digital record that we can view in real time each time an officer arrives at an electronic checkpoint.  If you don't think the officers are patrolling your street, we'll have an electronic record available to verify that they are patrolling your street.  We'll have historical information available as well.  There is no equipment to install and the officer will not need to be on your property.

Out of Town Info

If you are going to be out of town, please let us know no later than midnight on the day prior to your departure.  If you miss the midnight cutoff time, we'll simply wait until the next day at midnight to process your form.

One of the benefits of submitting an out of town form is that an EASP officer will check your home on foot at least once during every shift. The preferred method of notifying the EASP is by attaching an out of town patrol form to an e-mail and sending it to easp610gmail.com. We will accept either a Word version or a PDF version of the out of town patrol form.  You can also fax a copy of the out of town patrol form to the EASP at 866-274-1827. If you wish for the EASP to forward the out of town patrol form to Zone 6 and/or Safe Watch, check the appropriate boxes at the bottom of the form.  If you elect the Zone 6 option, APD officers from Beat 612  will attempt to check your home twice during each of their three shifts.  Thus, they should check your home six times per day, seven days per week.

If you elect the Safe Watch option, citizens affiliated with Safe Watch will patrol your block (they will be told to patrol the 1500 block of Glenwood) rather than be given an exact address such as 1520 Glenwood.  Safe Watch volunteers do not have strict schedules, and patrol as much as they can.  It's also possible that your block may be on the route of several people.  For these reasons, it's always hard for the EASP to tell you exactly how much coverage they provide, but we still see it as a positive to keep more eyes on your property when you're away.

You continue to have the option to fax the Zone 6 version of the out of town patrol form directly to APD, but this is an extra step and requires a fax machine.  It's much easier to e-mail the form to the EASP and have us forward it to Zone 6 and/or Safe Watch.

Once we receive your out of town patrol form, we will send you an e-mail confirmation to verify that your request has been processed.

If you don't have someone to pick up your mail and newspaper each day, you may fill out forms online to temporarily halt service.  You can have mail held by going to the USPS website.  You can stop the paper at the AJC website.

Membership Renewal

There are four ways to renew your membership in the EASP.  First, you can click on one of the buttons below and renew electronically using Paypal.  Second, you can renew at any EACA meeting.  Third, you can send your payment to EASP, PO Box 18366, Atlanta, GA 30316.  A fourth option is to use the bill payment service with your bank instead of mailing us a check.  If you are asked to provide a phone number when setting up EASP in your bill payment service, use 404-954-1568.  If you are asked to provide an account number, use 1234.  If an address is required, please use the P.O. Box listed above.  Many banks, including SunTrust and Bank of America, will complete the payment in one business day.  Other banks may take as long as five days to complete the payment if they mail a check rather than pay electronically.  Most banks allow free unlimited bill payments online, and unlike Paypal, EASP won't have to absorb a fee on each payment.
Renewal options are one year for $200, six months for $100 or three months for $50.  Residents age 65 and older or anyone living at the same address at least 20 years qualifies for half price Senior and Longtime Resident rates.  Members of a city-recognized Neighborhood Watch receive a 20% discount unless they qualify for the Senior and Longtime Resident rates.
